Battery, fob, or vehicle

A remote battery, damaged fob and vehicle-side fault can cause overlapping symptoms. Say whether the buttons work, whether the car starts, whether another key behaves differently, and whether there was recent water exposure or repair work. Those observations help narrow the assessment without assuming the cause.

Programming, not just pairing

A replacement fob has to be written to the vehicle so the car recognizes it and, on many makes, so old lost fobs are invalidated. If someone has your old remote, deleting it matters as much as adding the new one.

Can you erase a lost fob?

On most vehicles yes. If a remote is genuinely gone, invalidating it is worth doing.

I bought a fob online. Can it be programmed?

Compatibility must be checked first. Send the year, make, model and fob part number. A matching outer shell does not establish the correct electronics or whether a used fob can be reused.

What about remote start?

Say whether the system is factory-installed or aftermarket and identify the remote. Compatibility and which functions can be supported need to be confirmed for that system.
